Spring
Proper mowing practices is very important right now. Be sure your blades are cleaned and sharpened before 1st use. Be sure to not remove more than 2/3 of the grass blade at any given time so mowing more than once per week may be necessary during the spring months. Bag your clippings to help stop fungus diseases from forming. Fungus forms in the Spring but is not visible until Summer. Due to frequent rain, watering is not necessary right now. If you are planning on seeding avoid using crabgrass pre emergent. Pre emergent will prevent your seeds from taking root.
Summer
Now is the time to start watering. There are different schools of thought on how much and how often. Watering less frequently for a longer period of time trains your root system to grow deeper but this all depends on your lawn. If you do this and 90% of the water is not absorbed and runs off due to compaction or clay soil then you are just wasting water. Watering everyday or every other day for a shorter period of time may be the way to go to insure the lawn is getting enough especially during long periods of high temperatures and no rain. Be sure to start early enough so that the watering is finished by 8am. If the lawn is still wet after 10am cut back on the amount you are watering. Never water in the middle of the day or at night. Be sure to mow on the highest or second highest setting and bag your clippings.
Fall
Mowing and watering properly is still important this time of year. The lawn is trying to recover from Summer and prepare itself for Winter. Avoid bagging your clippings, fungus is not an issue right now so recycling them back into the lawn returns vital nutrients to the lawn. Keep up on the removal of leaves and nuts as these will stunt the growth of the lawn. Be sure to mow the lawn low on the last cutting of the year.
Winter
Avoid walking on the lawn when the temperatures are below freezing. The grass blades will be frozen and can bend and break showing damage in the Spring. Keep salt off lawn areas when spreading and shoveling, these products will damage the lawn.
